The Oscars II

Jewellers Sydney

Well, these seem to have been the most compelling Academy Awards in years, due to the battle between traditional values and the 21st century. However in jewellery this year the conservatives generally won.

Jewellers Sydney: The Diamond Jewellery of the Oscars 2019

Lady Gaga in the ultimate Tiffany necklace was not the only star on the red carpet whose jewellery thrilled though. Charlize Theron wore a pale blue backless Dior couture dress, new bobbed brown hair and not one but two Bulgari diamond necklaces, the 80 carat Serpenti and a tennis necklace as well as diamond bracelets and rings and huge, vivid diamond, sapphire and emerald drop earrings. Laura Harrier wore an eye-catching emerald and rubellite Bulgari necklace, and Gemma Chan in her pink Valentino had different Bulgari earrings — one in sapphires and one in emeralds — and diamond barrettes in her swept-back hair, spelling out ‘love’.

Harry Winston’s elegance dazzled. Laura Dern wore a strapless Rodarte with a 54 carat diamond necklace and her glasses. Sarah Paulson wore an unflattering, high-necked pink dress with a 55 carat Guipure diamond necklace and round brilliant diamond micropavé earstuds. Helen Mirren was in pink too — a Schiaparelli — exuding confidence and poise, and dripping with diamonds. Jennifer Hudson wore a striking pair of Winston vintage 1972 diamond chandelier earrings.

Rachel Weisz’ 1903 Belle Epoque Cartier brooches reset as a headband for their much exhibited Archive Collection will start a new trend, but it remains to be seen if her red beaded Givenchy and PVC cape will. Glenn Close wore vintage Cartier earrings and rings with her caped, beaded 40lb Carolina Herrera dress, while Amy Adams was in a skin-tight, beaded Versace dress highlighted by Cartier pieces, including a 1935 diamond brooch clipped onto a tennis necklace. Letitia Wright wore champagne-coloured Dior with her Cartier jewellery.

Chopard is owned by Michelle Yeoh’s ex-husband Dickson Poon and she was wearing swinging linear Chopard earrings and a spectacular 47 carat floral diamond wrap bracelet with her Elie Saab sequinned, off-the-shoulder lurex gown. Allison Janney was slim in red and US$4 million worth of Chopard diamonds, and Regina King was splendid in an ivory Oscar de la Renta with a 53 carat cuff. Olivia Colman’s high-necked green Prada was highlighted by her three Chopard earrings.

It’s fun to see what the stars are decked out in — but when you want something of your own call Karen at Diamonds by Design.
