The best songs about jewellery

Throughout the years, gems have been celebrated in song. From classics by the Beatles to more contemporary tunes from Prince, many songs have mentioned precious stones and many of these have gone on to become world famous, still played on air years after their original release. Here are five of the best songs about jewellery:

Diamonds and Pearls – Prince

Released in the early 90s by the late singer Prince, his ballad ‘Diamonds and Pearls’ was a huge hit in the United States, peaking at number three.

It was released when Prince was recording with the New Power Generation as his backing band, and his two backing singers were also called Diamond and Pearl.

Little Rock – Reba McEntire

This song isn’t so widely recognised throughout the world but, when it was released in the mid-eighties in the U.S., it soared to the top of the Billboard charts.

It’s not a happy song though. The lyrics portray a woman who isn’t happy with her married life, but still feels tied to her husband because of the ‘little rock’ on her finger.

Diamonds on the Soles of her Shoes – Paul Simon

Years after its release, ‘Diamonds on the soles of her shoes’ still gets played a lot and Simon’s collaboration with Ladysmith Black Mambazo, makes it one of the most memorable songs on his Graceland album.

Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds – The Beatles

Who can forget this Beatles classic? ‘Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds’ is considered one of the best tracks on the ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ album.

The song was partly inspired by John Lennon’s son, Julian and partly by Lewis Carroll’s classic Alice in Wonderland.

Ruby Tuesday – The Stones

Even if you weren’t around in the sixties, you’ll probably know this song by the Rolling Stones. The lyrics were always considered controversial, but that didn’t stop the song from becoming a global hit.

It has since been named one of the top 500 songs of all time by the aptly named magazine Rolling Stone magazine.

Conclusion:

Of all musical gems, the timeless diamond has been featured in song most often. From Marilyn Monroe, Shirley Bassey and Joan Baez to Prince, the Beatles and Paul Simon, famous singers have sung about diamonds. This shows that, without a doubt, the diamond is a strong part of our culture, and it always will be.
